What is common sense? How are common knowledge and sociology related to each other? Explain.
Model Answer
1. Introduction
Common sense refers to the routine, practical knowledge and beliefs shared by members of a society, acquired through everyday socialization. Sociology, on the other hand, is the systematic, empirical study of human society, social institutions, and social relationships.
2. Differences between Common Sense and Sociology
- Methodology: Common sense is based on personal experiences, assumptions, and hearsay. Sociology relies on structured research methodologies, empirical verification, and objectivity.
- Nature of Knowledge: Common sense is localized, uncritical, and often reinforces status quo. Sociology is critical, seeks to "debunk" taken-for-granted social realities (as Peter Berger argued), and identifies hidden structural patterns.
- Theoretical Foundation: Sociology connects individual experiences with larger historical and structural processes (C. Wright Mills' Sociological Imagination), whereas common sense treats individual actions in isolation.
3. Interrelation between Common Knowledge and Sociology
Despite their differences, they are deeply related:
- Raw Material for Sociology: Common sense beliefs serve as the starting point or hypotheses for sociological research. For example, Emile Durkheim tested the common-sense belief that suicide is a purely psychological act and proved it has social causes.
- Reflexive Loop: Sociological findings often filter down into public consciousness and become part of common knowledge over time (e.g., concepts like 'gender roles' or 'unconscious bias').
4. Conclusion
While sociology must go beyond common sense to establish objective facts, it remains grounded in the everyday social reality that common sense describes.
