• Ideational Foundation: Textual perspective provides the normative framework of Indian society. Concepts like Dharma, Karma, Purusharthas, and the Varna system are essential to understanding the core values that govern social behavior.
• G.S. Ghurye's Contribution: As the pioneer of this approach, Ghurye utilized classical Sanskrit texts to trace the origins of caste, kinship structures, and religious practices in India, proving that contemporary institutions have deep historical continuities.
• Louis Dumont's Homo Hierarchicus: Dumont used textual analysis to argue that the caste system is based on the binary opposition of the 'pure' and the 'impure', which is a unique cultural value system distinct from Western stratification.

3. Critiques of the Textual Perspective

• "Book View" vs. "Field View": Critics like M.N. Srinivas argued that the textual perspective represents a "book view" which is often elitist (Brahmanical) and does not match the actual reality on the ground ("field view").
• Static Representation: It tends to depict Indian society as static, harmonious, and unchanging, ignoring historical conflicts, caste exploitation, and subaltern resistance.
